It was a glorious melding of the two worlds. The Matrix 12 was Oberheim's legendary flagship synthesizer of the mid to late 80's. The Matrix 12 is the culmination of Oberheim's search for the 'perfect analog synthesizer'. This was a level of sophistication previously only available in a fully modular system. Like the Xpander, it offered a breathtaking number of modulation sources and destinations — 27 and 47, respectively.
Another factor in defining the complex sound of the Matrix-12 was the amazing number of modulation sources and destinations it provided. All the Matrix synthesizers featured Matrix Modulation which allows for extremely wild virtual patching for almost unlimited range of sounds and modulation capabilities! In the late '80s Oberheim produced another synth called the. Matrix 12 is a programmable analog polyphonic synthesizer with the functionality of the modular system. And it was equally critical to capture every nuance of its 15 filter modes, so we kept at it until they had been modeled perfectly! Matrix 6 and 1000 are compatible. And there's plenty of diagrams drawn out on the front panel of the synth to help you figure out some signal routing.
Good sound, pads, brasses and effects - like tradition in Oberheim. Now you could fill your rack with all your favorite sound modules and free up lot's of space in your studio that were once occupied by all those monster sized keyboards. While these are what Oberheim shipped with the keyboards, they are double-sided photocopied pages - not offset printed like most new manuals. It recreates the characteristics of analog oscillators in amazing detail, transparency and clarity, as well as the exact properties of the analog filters that give each classic instrument its unique sound. This means that it is a 12-voice 12-part multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer. But for pads, etc, the M12 has a warm, rich sound that is not possible to duplicate using anything else.
And software editors such as Unisyn make graphic editing possible for much easier programming. The Matrix-12 is like having 2 Oberheim Xpanders with a keyboard. If a part is shown as Out of Stock, then we do not have it, and in most cases, we don't know when or even if we might have it again. We can no longer research or special order parts that are not listed here, and we just don't have time to answer questions about parts that we don't carry. But it is an option that can be added. But it's not a problem, it is to be found sr new sounds every day, so the possibilities are standard. It is used by The Orb, Gravity Kills, Vangelis, Technotronic, and Depeche Mode. One of the fattest, roundest, pleasantly analog synthesizers around! Essentially a digital version of the patch cables used on modular synths, the digital Matrix Modulation system allowed for vast modulation options.
The Matrix series gets the name the Digital Matrix Control a digital way to internally route signals and modulation to different synt section, simplified from previous huge modular patchbays. Interface is even more limited and deep edit is not possible from panel. The front panel is exactly like the Xpander, except for one button that switches between voices 1-6 and 7-12. The panel contained several displays, each capable of displaying a single line of text.
